The Flight Of The Flu

Even though there have been computer simulations that suggest the link between the flu and traveling, there has never really been a study proving that until recently.

Airline travel is one of the easiest ways to catch and spread influenza a contagious disease that effects your respiratory system. So the question then arises about flight restrictions and if they can control the pandemic the spread of a disease over a large area. This study was published in PloS Medicine and it provides actual observations of this problem.

Researchers have compared the timing and the number of influenza deaths in 122 American cities with the volume of airline travel during each flu seasons throughout nine years (from 1996 to 2005). They found that changes in the rate of deaths every year are consistent with monthly airline travel. November shows a high increase in influenza infections and late February is when the death rate hits its peak. So the suggestion is that the Thanksgiving holiday travel can be the main factor in the speed of the spread of influenza.

The study proved that the fewer domestic airline passengers there are, the slower the flu moves across the country. This effect was especially present after the September 11 attacks, when a temporary flight ban was placed within the United States and airline travel was lower than in any other season from 1995 to 2005.

Is there really anything the airlines can do to help with this situation? The need for speed between flights limits the cleaning that can be done. Once on the airplane, we are dependent on the air conditioning working correctly and filtering all the gems it pulls in before it recycles the air again. The airlines are in the business of selling seats, so can we really ask them to start checking travelers for health problems.

For most of us, the need to get somewhere will outweigh the risk of catching the flu.

10 Dating Tips for Divorced Men part 1

What do you do when you just went through a bitter divorce and now you find yourself on the single scene once again??

Where do you start?

How do you meet women again?

Do you know how to properly approach beautiful women? Sometimes, it appears that the times have drastically changed since you were last single. How do you begin anew?

In my line of work, I get all sorts of clients and inevitably some of the men are divorced guys looking to work the single scenes, except they have no idea where to begin. It's been a quite a while since they hit the bar scene with the fellas and approached girls and now, what perhaps used to be second nature, feels a bit foreign.

It seems as if the times have changed so much. Perhaps they never great at attracting women and they feel like they lucked out with that one girl they married, and now she is gone. Oh, what will they do now??

Now, I have to be honest with you. I have never been divorced. Then again, that may be because I have never been married either. My job is to help guys from all walks of life meet women, build attraction, and have a successful dating life. My job is to help men attract women. Whether you plan to get married again or not is none of my business.

If you have been out of the scene for a while, you need to become acclimated into the single scene once again.

Now, I am going to lay out a specific 10 Step program to enable you to effectively join the single scene again and start attracting more women.

***STEP 1- Attitude readjustment***

It all starts with your ATTITUDE. This is the first step!

You have to make a decision. I can give you all sorts of dating advice but it won't do you any good until you decide that you want to get this part of your life handled.

So you have a choice: You can either sit there, bitch and complain about how the times have changed, about how it's been so long since you have done the single thing, and what a shame it is, OR you can make a decision NOW to attract a great woman (women) in your life. If you are reading through this article, perhaps you have already made this decision!

This is a time to celebrate your freedom! Chances are if you were married for 15 or 20 years, you were institutionalized, sort of like the character of "Brooks" from the classic movie "The Shawshank Redemption." If you've seen the movie, you know exactly what I am talking about. "Brooks" from Shawshank wanted to choose staying in a sadistic and brutal prison rather than celebrate a freedom that came with uncertainty.

When you were married, things made sense even if the circumstances were atrocious. Now, things suddenly do not make sense and this is a scary feeling.

You must realize that this is a temporary state, and it will pass. You're not the first man to become divorced, nor are you the last.

In fact 60% of marriages end up in a divorce in some parts of the country so you're in pretty good company.

Adjust your attitude. Start to realize that you have just opened the door to a world of new possibilities. Celebrate your new found freedom and the door that has just been opened to new possibilities.

***STEP 2- Burn your old clothes. Time for a makeover***

Look, I know it's possible that you were already a sharp dresser. Anything is possible!! We live in a country that lets Geraldo on TV! In my experience, however, most men have no clue how to dress properly and when it comes to married men, forget about it.

In my experience, most married men I meet, have settled into a comfort zone where the sweatshirt over plain pants look has become their calling card. If you are back on the single scene, it'd help if you started to once again take care of your appearance. It's time to a grab a few new outfits, a pair of new shoes, and do some grooming.

I understand how basic this sounds but you may be astounded as to how many guys I come across who fail their basic grooming. Just make sure your hair (don't care if it's completely shaved or in a pompadour,) your beard/goatee, looks like it's been cared for.

Good Breath is on top of this list. The problem is most people including many of your buddies won't tell you that you have bad breath. They'll just run away. Our first step is to make certain that we are taking care of the basics.

Change the way you dress, start grooming, and look presentable. Look like you're in demand and that you know it!

***STEP 3- Start Approaching***

Make an effort to approach more women and grow your social circle. You have to start socializing more with women as well as more men. Most married couples hang out with other married couples, talk about babies, fight over bills, and watch reruns of Law & Order.

It's needless to say that regardless of the conversational topics, this particular social circle isn't going to introduce you to as many single women as you'd like to meet. Hence, it'd be very wise to start creating new social circles that include single people, or at the very least, people in relationships who are still in touch with the single world.

You must realize that this takes some effort on your part. You ought to start initiating conversations with more women everywhere you go. Most people immediately think of going to bars and clubs. Depending on your age, taste, likes and dislikes, you may not be a bar/club guy. That's certainly understandable.

You can still make an effort to approach women during your daily activities which could range from supermarket and coffee-shops to various classes, clubs, and the gym.

You also may want to give online personals a try. I'd only advise you to utilize the personals as a supplemental means to meet women, not as your only means to meet new women.

***STEP 4- Start exercising again***

I am being a bit presumptuous here. If you're doing it already, that's fantastic. Most married guys start growing horizontally. Exercise will make you FEEL better physically, emotionally, and mentally. It will also boost your self-confidence which is of the utmost importance! Plus if you join a gym, you will meet new people, females as well as males. (Not to mention that it will improve your physical appearance.)

This is not a ploy to pick up women. You'll feel better because of it!

***STEP 5- Establishing New networks***

Look to create a network of single friends who really enjoy going out and meeting women. Nothing would probably encourage you more to actually enjoy going out and meeting women more than surrounding yourself with a few guys who like to have a good time and socialize.

Hanging with introverts who want to sit home and maybe play a card game or two is not going to help you meet more women. If you are going to hang with guys like that, then make sure you balance it with hanging with a few animals who want to hit the outdoor life.

Top 10 Excuses People Make For Dating Failure (Part Two)

Last week we talked about the first five of the "Top Ten Excuses" single adults make for dropping out of the dating pool. Today we'll cover the second half of the list. Fair warning-the bottom half of the list is even more hard-hitting than the first five, so fasten your seat belts. If you are making excuses for dating failure, prepare to be challengedin the best possible way!

The first five "excuses" centered around physical limitations, advanced age, kids, game playing and finances. Let's continue where we left off:

1) Shyness

If words are hard to come by and meeting people is not easy, you certainly aren't alone. For better or worse, women still largely expect men to approach them first, so men especially have to get around shyness. This is probably the #1 excuse men give (along with the next one), and citing it can only point to one thing: you simply lack the guts to go for it. Women love men who are confident, and being able to start a conversation with an attractive woman is a key indicator of this. So guys, you just have to find the courage to make conversations happen. There are innumerable books and articles written on this elsewhere, but the best place to start is simply to make conversation with waitresses, bank tellers and any other women you meet during the course of daily life. Once you realize they will be friendly back, you are on the road to getting over shyness. If, on the other hand, you find women are NOT responding well, it's time to address creepiness-because women will normally respond very favorably (if not necessarily romantically) to any man who is friendly and non-threatening.

Ladies if you find yourself clamming up when an interesting guy approaches you, the same concept holds true. Just treat the conversation as if with anyone you've already known for years. Easier said than done, I realize, but again practice makes perfect.

2) Fear Of Rejection

Ah yesthe second excuse that men so often make. Our poor egos would be sooo bruised if a woman fails to validate us. The quickest cure for this is for a guy to begin to view approaching women as an opportunity to validate HER as a potential friend rather than a "do or die" referendum on whether she "accepts" him or not. That way, there's really no "rejection" involved, is there? The prevailing scenario is-again-that typically women will be friendly to guys who aren't obnoxious or creepy. If they are in fact rude to a guy who approaches, my feeling is that the guy dodged a serious bullet. Who wants to get stuck with a rude woman?

Fear of rejection can manifest itself even after a relationship is rolling. If we've been "dumped" a few times in a row it's easy to give up on dating altogether. Once again, asking the right questions ASAP in a relationship can help make sure differences in goals don't show up later. It's also important to look in the mirror if we get dumped time and again-especially if for no apparent reason. Are you giving vibes that you might not be trustworthy long term? Have you become less personable as your "true colors" are shown? Are you pushing too hard for commitment too early? All of these are GREAT reasons to get "dumped". Make sure you aren't perpetrating your own revolving-door relationships.

3) Risk

Schedule a few dates in public places and you'll soon realize that most of your dates aren't "dangerous"even the ones you meet online. Once such "physical risks" are mitigated, consider emotional risks carefully. If you are afraid of "getting hurt" consider the types of people most likely to inflict emotional pain and avoid them. This means asking the right questions regarding what is expected out of a relationship' and-quite simply-not becoming emotionally attached to someone with a different agenda. Will you ever be able to take all "risk" off the table? No. But as Tennyson is so often quoted as saying, "it's better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all." Believe that, and you've cured yourself of this excuseespecially when you realize just how much lower the "risk factors" can truly be when the right conversations happen from the beginning.

4) "No Man Can Handle Me"

This is the mantra of smart, successful and / or strong willed women everywhere. Don't "dumb down" for anyone, but do make an effort to position yourself where you have the opportunity to meet guys who meet your standards. I'll be the first to acknowledge that sitting at the top of the bell curve means that your dating options are limited as a woman in particular. But you can and will meet a man you can respectif you are determined. Don't give up.

5) Disdain For The Opposite Sex

Well, I hope that it comes as no surprise that people who really can't stand the opposite gender have a tough time finding someone of that demographic who is willing to commit to them. When spelled out so clearly it actually sounds silly, doesn't it? If your sexual orientation is straight yet you don't like the opposite sex much, plan on being very lonely until that is dealt with. Argue with me if you so choose, but my personal experience is that people who don't like the opposite sex are typically hard to get along with for members of their OWN gender also. Go figure.

Healthy relationships are one of life's greatest gifts. Everything we do here at X & Y Communications revolves around that principle. Instead of "giving up" in the face of doubt, the better response is to make the effort to deserve what you want. Through doing that the weakness imposed upon us by excuses for failure are transformed into power by virtue of taking responsibility for our own success. Cool, huh?

If your fuel has a high cetane number, you can be sure that what you get is a very easy cold starting coupled with a low idle noise.

5. Biodiesel can make your car last longer. Because of the clarity and the purity of biodiesel, you can be sure it will not have too many impurities to harm your car. It is actually more lubrication. A cars power output is unaffected by this type of diesel.

6. Biodiesel reduces the environmental effect of a waste product. Because biodiesel is made out of waste products itself, it does not contribute to natures garbage at all. Biodiesel can be made out of used cooking oils and lards. So instead of throwing these substances away, the ability to turn them into biodiesel becomes more than welcome.

7. Biodiesel is energy efficient. If the production of biodiesel is compared with the production of the regular type, producing the latter consumes more energy. Biodiesel does not need to be drilled, transported, or refined like petroleum diesel. Producing biodiesel is easier and is less time consuming.

8. Biodiesel is produced locally. A locally produced fuel will be more cost efficient. There is no need to pay tariffs or similar taxes to the countries from which oil and petroleum diesel are sourced. Every country has the ability to produce biodiesel.

Biodiesel is surely a viable fuel alternative. Moreover, it is also a sustainable fuel. Using biodiesel not only helps maintain our environment, it also helps in keeping the people around us healthy.

Foundation Supports Student Achievement In Denver Schools

The Denver Public School Foundation is a portal for community and business philanthropy for the Denver schools. Originally started in 1984, it played a passive role in the Denver schools, until it was revitalized in 2002.

The purpose of the Denver schools foundation is to raise and manage funds in support of the districts ambitious plan to improve student achievement. The Denver schools leadership develops the funding areas, and the foundation drives community investment and builds partnerships with local businesses. The price tag for improving student academic achievement is much higher than the available monies provided through annual city, state and federal funding.

During the 2005-2006 school year, the foundations accomplishments show it to be a vital arm of the Denver schools scholastic achievement initiative. Here are the major highlights:

The foundation raised $750,000 to implement the first Principals Institute that was held in June 2006. Leadership training, designed to improve student achievement, was provided to 130 Denver schools principals, and new strategies were developed by the principals to transform their schools into effective learning organizations. The Denver schools principals will continue to be supported in their objectives in 2006-2007 by attending monthly professional development sessions that began in August.

The foundation raised $250,000 to implement DPS Success, which provides supplemental instruction in math and literacy to students in grades three through ten. During the 2005-2006 school year, 558 teachers provided extra tutoring instruction to approximately 8,400 students in 82 schools.

The School Partners Program was launched with $250,000 raised by the foundation. The program will create tailor-made partnerships between the Denver schools and Denver area businesses, raising even more support for the Denver schools initiatives in the future.

The A to Z Fund was developed to provide funding support for individual school programs and projects, ensuring that every student has an equal opportunity to access the same types of activities and further enrich the learning experience of Denver schools students. The goal is to raise $100,000 by December 2006, with the first funding cycle beginning in February 2007.

The foundation facilitated the requests of numerous donors, who wanted their donations to underwrite specific projects. Some of the projects were library improvement, health and safety education programs, new gymnasium scoreboards, and athletic equipment.

The Lights On After School initiative was developed to advance the quality of after-school programs in support of the Denver schools students. The following accomplishments are from this program:

o $658,000 in grants was awarded to 87 elementary and middle schools to support their after-school programs that served approximately 8,500 Denver schools students.

o Over $260,00 ensured that 3,000 middle school students could participate in competitive after-school sports.

o A study, released in April 2006, showed that multiple-year participation in quality and diverse after-school programs in the Denver schools does result in positive student achievement and school attendance.

o Phillips Elementary School improved its reading test scores for third graders from 45 percent proficient or advanced in 2004 to 89 percent in 2005. The school attributes its successes to Lights On After School tutoring.

o Tom Roberts, a Morey Middle School student, finished first at the Denver-metro Math Counts competition in March 2006. Math Counts at Morey is funded by the Lights On After School initiative.

During the 2006-2007 school year, the foundation will continue to support the above initiatives, as well as the following:

Teacher Induction Program support new teachers during their first three years of service in the Denver schools, and

A Smile

If you want to make God smile, just tell him what your plans are. I found that out this summer on my sailing adventure. We would travel from Kingston, Ontario, through the Welland Canal into Lake Erie, up the Detroit and St. Claire rivers into Lake Huron. Then we would continue north along the west coast of the lake into Georgian Bay and the North Channel. Almost three months of adventure and exploration! I spent many hours planning the trip, right down to what date I would be in a specific town. It was a wonderful master plan and very strategic. Those who wanted to join us knew when and where they could hop on board.

I dont think I ever planned in such great detail in the time I worked. The detail of the plan even included bad-weather days and stops just because we liked the town or area we were in. The friends who planned to join us picked the part of the trip they wanted, and we confirmed time and place to meet.

Off we went with great enthusiasm and anticipation. I hid my fears of the unknown what if the winds were too strong, if there were no winds, if the motor failed? and many more doubts. There was no wind on most of Lake Erie on the way out and more wind than we wanted on the way back. We motored a lot more than Id expected. I wanted to sail, to see the sails working, driving the boat. This was not my dream or fantasy.

I should have expected something would go wrong with the motor after all the use it got. Sure enough, the fuel pump sprang a leak. On a diesel engine, this is not a good thing. But it was not a big leak so I thought I would nurse it back to Kingston and get it fixed there. I picked up some friends in Windsor, and off we went on time and according to our plan. In fact we were a couple of days ahead of schedule since we didnt hit any bad weather that would have kept us in port.

Ask anyone who lives and sails on Lake Erie how very rare it is to have an east wind. An east wind was the only wind I did not want. It would mean I would have to motor, driving directly into the wind. I thought about tacking back and forth across the lake, but that would mean added time. We would not be able to keep to our schedule. I couldnt have that I had to follow my plan.

The more stress I put on the motor, the bigger the leak got. I nursed it as far as Port Stanley and put in for repairs. It was late Friday and no one was available until Monday. I had a few days in the bank so we could wait. The four of us explored the wonderful port town and had a great time waiting for Monday.

The diesel repairman looked at the problem and announced it would have to come off and go to London for repairs, an hour up the road. He took off the pump and went to London. He came back and stated it was only a gasket and easy to replace but the diesel shop wouldnt be able to look at it until Friday. Then they would let him know when it would be ready. One week and four days later we left for Port Colbourne and the Welland Canal. Who would have thought the remnants of hurricane Ernesto would bring high winds, and you guessed it, out of the east? The first time we tried to leave, the wind and waves were overpowering. We left next morning, and Ernesto dealt us 45-knot winds again from the east. We ran to Port Dover for a safe harbour. Altogether, we lost two weeks and two days on Lake Erie.

You need to plan, but more than the plan, you need to be flexible. No matter how well you plan and time-line, no matter how great your strategic planners are, there is always the unknown. But I guess if you can make God smile, you have accomplished a great thing.

Car Travel with Pets

You really need to wear heavy leather gloves (the kind that go up to your shoulder) if you are going to try to get my cat Eddie into the Mini-Van, but many pets love to drive, almost more than their owners. While I've only had to take Eddie for a ride a few times, he has taught us a great deal about what can happen to the inside of a car, with a pet.

Pets are a joy to have with us, but they do have special needs to help them stay comfortable and us happy.

Pet Hair

Hair is the hardest item to clean off upholstery and carpeting. Trying to vacuum it up is a waste of time for the most part. The fibers weave into the carpeting and fabrics of our car, and grip.

What gets hair off the carpet and fabrics fast and easy is rubber or latex gloves. There is a product out there called the Pet Sponge, which works great too, but it is really made from the same substance. Just put on a glove, get it a little damp and run your hand across the pet hair area. Your glove will fill with pet hair, effortlessly. Rinse off, and go in for another swipe.

Heat

If you are traveling with a pet, get a sun shield. Seriously. I know we sell them, and this looks like a great place to put an ad, but the facts are, cars heat up way too fast, and much hotter than we realize.

From a cool just-air-conditioned state, it takes a car less than 20 minutes to reach 120 degrees sitting in the sun, even with the window 'cracked' open for fresh air. In summer times, or hot days, the interior can reach 150 degrees in the same amount of time.

Well made, reflective sun shields can reduce your car's temperature by 50 degrees. Leaving the window 'cracked' is still a good idea, but keeping the interior heat level down is much better.

Urine

Don't ask.

Getting the Urine out of the interior carpeting is a bit of a chore. Start with baking soda. Just pour it on dry and let it sit over night. Vacuum and repeat, letting the baking soda sit again. Vacuum up the last layer and then pour into the affected area Hydrogen peroxide. Let this evaporate, and then vacuum.

This won't remove any stain or discoloration, but it will get the odor out and neutralize the urine itself. From this point you can use a carpet or upholstery cleaner to remove any stain that might remain.

Comfort

Keeping pets comfortable and safe inside the vehicle is sometimes a creative challenge. We do have several car accessories for pets which can help you with some of the details.

Cargo Area Travel Liner: This is full comfort. The padded liner is cushioned and slip resistant, and allows your pet full access to the cargo area of your min-van. The liner is water resistant and tear resistant. Your pet can walk around on the textured fabric without slipping and sliding. The rear of your vehicle can get warm, so the fabric is breathable to keep your pet comfortable in any season.

Seat Covers: Same idea as the cargo liner, just a smaller space. The fabric and comfort are the same, and so is the ease of cleaning and the protection provided to your interior.

Pet Barriers: These barriers limit your pets movement, and with many pets this is a good idea. It also adds to their safety.

With pet barriers, windows can also be let down a little more, providing cooler conditions when you have to leave your pet in the vehicle while traveling. (it is still a very good idea to also use the sun shield I talked about earlier).

Organizer: Pets need stuff! Feeding dishes, snacks, leashes, collars, scoopers, and so much more. Pets need a lot of stuff, and keeping it organized is a good thing when traveling with your four legged partner. Leashes get tangled and "lost" quickly. Having a place to store these required items, for easy access, allows you more fun and less hassle.

Well the vertical resolution (number of horizontal lines on the screen) is essentially 720p (progressive), 1080i (interlaced), or higher. So whats progressive and interlaced? In laymens terms, HD can be transmitted in either progressive, which is where line 1 is followed by line 2, line 3, or it can be interlaced, where the odd lines 1, 3, 5 are followed by the even lines 2, 4, 6, which is indistinguishable to the naked eye. The upshot of this is that a less bandwidth is required for interlaced (i.e. only 540 lines (half 1080)).

You will also need to sport an HD analogue connection (YpbPr (component input) through industry standard connections; (e.g. Phono) and HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) or DVI (Digital Visual Interface) digital input connector. Either digital connection must be capable of supporting HDCP (High bandwidth Digital Content Protection), which is the chosen method of rights management for HDTV. DVI (which does not carry audio) will also require connections for either RCA/Phono stereo or, as is becoming more prevalent, Dolby 5.1 surround.

The Distribution

Distribution of HD video around the home can be done in both analogue and digital formats, although analogue is the most prevalent at the moment. The use of CAT5 (5e or 6) is the best method of getting your signals around the home. This ensures that the core infrastructure of the home is set for the future should your equipment be upgraded.

Cat5 can be used in one of two ways, in simple terms as an in wall cable extender, from one location to another. It can also be used as a full multi source, multi room distribution system, allowing the quality of the HD picture to invade every room.

Most distribution systems will allow the use of a remote control in each room to control the centrally located HD equipment (e.g. HD Set-top-box, HD-DVD). When you laying in bed the last thing you want is to go down stairs to change the channel!
